The Nittany Wildkatz were formed in 2004 by Jessica Patrick, former Penn State Cheerleader, with two squads, the Youth and Senior. These squads traveled throughout Pennsylvania and the East Coast to prove to the nation that Central PA has some extremely talented cheerleaders!! In 2005, the Wildkatz added three more teams, for a total of 5 teams. One of the additions to the program was the new Open Team for those ages 18 and above or out of high school, which allowed graduates to continue to pursue their love of cheerleading!! In 2006, the Wildkatz added a hip-hop dance team,. On tap for the 2007 season, the Program will also include the CheerBears, for those youngsters below the age of 5, who wish to be introduced to cheerleading and develop their skills for entry into our competitive program.
Tryouts are typically held in May, but private tryouts can be arranged through December 31st of each season (June 1st through May 31st). On the cheer side of the Program, the following team options are available:
CheerBears (ages 2-5 years, non-competitive),
Kittenz (age 7 years and below),
Kubz (age 9 years and below),
Juniors (age 13 years and below),
Seniors (age 18 years and below),
Open (age 18 years and above or out of high school).
Team placement is based on both age and ability level, although no prior experience is required. The Wildkatz pride themselves in working with local youth and high school program schedules to ensure that team members get the best overall cheerleading experience. The Program Director, Jess Patrick, along with her assistant coach, Kris Wahl, encourage all of their high school graduates to tryout for their college squads and work with them in obtaining college scholarships.
Our team members are active members of their communities, and the teams also participate in various charity events throughout the year to help raise funds for those in need. With a very active Booster Club, the Wildkatz give a portion of their time and money to very worthwhile charities. The Booster Club works very hard to organize special events throughout the year. This past year, the Program collected boxes full of assorted food items for the State College food bank, as well as the Faith Center in Bellefonte. Each year the Program donates a portion of proceeds from select fundraising events to charity, including PSU’s THON, where the teams also provide a special motivational performance for the dancers. In addition, the Wildkatz participate in the Walk for Diabetes each October, providing a team of walkers as well as a large cash donation to the charity. At our own home competition, the Nittany Valley Spirit Rally held in March each year, a special presentation and raffle donation is made to the Make-A-Wish organization, featuring a special child at the event.
The Nittany Wildkatz cheer program is designed not only to develop the team members into better cheerleaders, but also to provide them with the means to gain valuable life skills, such as: discipline, self-confidence, trust, friendship, teamwork, pride, leadership and dedication. With the Nittany Wildkatz, you get the FULL package!
